Racks & Servers & Power, Oh My!

I felt led to write an article to show some interesting facts about data centers that many people may not be aware of.

A Data Center is basically a big building/room full of cabinets that contain many pieces of computing equipment (servers, data storage, etc.) that make the applications we use daily function.

Hyper-V Virtualization Cluster

Our Hyper-V cluster test/development setup.

It is currently comprised of qty 6 HP servers running windows server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and clustering roles.  Attached to network via two 48-port managed gigabit switches.  Two iSCSI SANs (12TB and 2TB) are used for storage.

HADOOP - Qty 13 - Dell CS-24 Servers

For our test HADOOP cluster, we will use 13 of these servers.  Each server has qty 2 – Intel Xeon L5420 2.5Ghz Quad-core CPU, 16GB RAM, qty 1 – 1TB SATA drive (4 drives possible), qty 3 – 1Gbps NIC (2 for production, 1 for mgmt), single power supply.
